The world of The Walking Dead is expanding with the first of three new spinoffs coming to AMC. The Walking Dead: Dead City follows Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they venture to what’s left of New York City on a dangerous rescue mission.
Now that the main flagship series has come to an end, several characters’ stories will continue through spinoffs. The Maggie-Negan spinoff will be followed by The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon starring Norman Reedus, coming later this year, and then the as-yet-untitled Rick and Michonne series starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. It’s an exciting time to be a member of the TWD Family with so many new shows on the horizon.

What to Watch had a chance to screen all six episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City. We’d been excited about the premiere since seeing the trailer at WonderCon and interviewing Lauren Cohan, Gaius Charles and showrunner Eli Jorné, who referred to the TWD spinoff as a “trauma playground.”
If you know me, you know I’m a huge fan of The Walking Dead and all facets of the extended universe that have been building over the past few years. Dead City not only hits all of the right notes, but in my opinion it surpasses the other shows in a number of ways.
A new world opens up with Dead City, and it’s a sandbox I’m very eager to explore. Some time has passed since the events of The Walking Dead finale, and a lot has changed. Maggie and Negan aren’t the same people they were when we last saw them; they still have their old baggage, and they have some new baggage as well.
Dead City has the advantage of being filmed over a decade after The Walking Dead, the original juggernaut that started this whole mad journey into the zombie apocalypse. With that in mind, it has the benefit of new technology, new effects and — most importantly — the benefit of experience.
Jorné, who worked as a writer on TWD, understands the complex dynamic between Maggie and Negan and doesn’t even try to sugarcoat the depth of Maggie’s loathing toward, or the desperation that drives her to work with him to save her son. Negan struggles as who he was before collides with who he is now, forcing a reckoning. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan absolutely shine in the spinoff, breathing new life into characters that fans have come to know so well over the years. TWD newcomers Gaius Charles and Željko Ivanek lead a terrific cast of new characters who fit right into the TWD Universe.
Dead City is dark, so much darker than any other TWD show to date. One of the things I was most excited to see was how a big city dealt with the apocalypse and the answer is pretty straightforward — they didn’t fare well. Kudos to the set designers and effects team who managed to turn an iconic city into a barren wasteland full of the undead and some of the most unsavory characters we’ve ever seen in this universe. (If you’ve been longing for a show that doesn’t take place in the woods — TWD Family, you know what I mean by this! — then Dead City is for you)
With six episodes to work with, the writing is tight and the action is focused. It’s a shame the season isn’t longer, but Jorné and his team make the most of every moment. Each episode flows well and builds delicious tension as the stakes continue to climb.
The Walking Dead: Dead City is a welcome addition to the TWD Universe, and here’s to hoping that there’s a bright future in store for this fantastically dark spinoff. — Sarabeth Pollock

The Walking Dead: Dead City cast
Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are familiar faces around the TWD Universe. Though their characters in The Walking Dead don't get along (Negan killed Maggie's husband in season 7), they played husband and wife in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Morgan played Wayne family patriarch Thomas Wayne and Cohan played his wife, Martha.
Cohan joined the show in season 2 and barring a brief departure from the series she was there through it all. Cohan is also known for roles in The Boy, Whiskey Cavalier and Mile 22.
Morgan might be best known for his role as the Winchester patriarch in Supernatural, but he's also starred in Watchmen, Grey's Anatomy and Rampage. He's also joining the cast of The Boys in season 4.
Joining Cohan and Morgan in Dead City are Gaius Charles (Friday Night Lights), Zeljko Ivanek (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Karina Ortiz (The Long Road Home), Jonathan Higginbotham (Shining Vale), and Mahina Napoleon (NCIS: Hawai'i).

How to watch The Walking Dead: Dead City
AMC is the home for all shows in The Walking Dead Universe and is usually included with a standard cable subscription. If you don’t have cable, you can watch AMC through live TV streaming services like YouTube TV, Fubo TV and Sling TV.
